The National Institution for Transforming India (NITI) Aayog has told the environment ministry that renewable sources can make up at least 15% of India’s energy mix by 2030 if present policies are given a push. This analysis was done as part of the government’s strategy to enumerate India’s climate action plan to be submitted to United Nations.

The action plan, called Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs), is awaiting Cabinet approval and is expected to be made in the first week of September. Environment minister Prakash Javadekar had said that India’s submission to the UN will be the most exhaustive, covering all crucial climate change areas — mitigation, adaption, finance, technology.  

As energy is the most important component of the INDCs, the NITI Aayog has conducted a detailed analysis of the futuristic energy needs depending on different scenarios. “We have presented various scenarios and told the environment ministry that by 2030, India’s energy mix can have 15% renewable share easily,” a senior NITI Aayog official told HT.

The analysis shows it would be a big leap for India as renewable energy currently contributes to less than 6% of the country’s energy mix. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced setting up a green power capacity of 175 gigawatts (GW) by 2022 to ensure every household gets adequate power.

India’s power demand by 2030 is expected to be about 10 lakh MW. According to the panel, the biggest contributors to enhanced green power will be solar and wind energy, contributing about 70% to total power generation by renewable, followed by nuclear energy. India plans to generate 20,000 MW of power from nuclear energy by 2030, when renewable is expected to contribute 2,00,000 MW of energy.

NEW DELHI: Delhi Power minister Satyendra Jain on Thursday said that the state will produce 2,000 MW electricity by 2025 through solar power generation.

"We want to achieve 1,000 MW target in next 4-5 years' time and we aim to generate 2000 MW electricity by the year 2025 in a phased manner," Jain said while inaugurating a conference on 'Solar Power: 1,00,000 MW @2022 - Accelerating Deployment', organised by Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM).

"Our target would be 30-40 MW in the 1st year, 100 MW in the 2nd year, then 200 MW in the next year followed by 400 MW and so on."

Stressing upon the need for innovation and new inventions in solar power generation, the minister said: "We aim to fast-tracking solar power projects in Delhi by about 20 per cent. Solar panels could be installed at railway platforms, metro stations, bus stops etc."

Terming financing of solar power generation as a challenge, he suggested the financial institutions to introduce "solar power mutual funds", and luring the investors by providing assured units of power at a fixed rate.

Maharashtra backs solar power

The Maharashtra government is bringing a policy giving concessions to housing societies and new housing projects for installing solar energy panels. The incentives will include relaxing some taxes and giving more FSI for new buildings. The move has been made to encourage the use of solar energy in the state.

“We have prepared a draft of the policy to boost the use of solar energy in the state. The policy is meant for housing societies, residential complexes and institutions. Our emphasis is that the people should use rooftop solar panels and solar cookers, water heaters, purifiers, lamps and pumps,” an official from the energy department said. The proposal is expected to come before the Cabinet this month for approval, the official added.

The government is going to give the status of ‘green building’ to institutes that follow the policy norms, he said. “Other incentives could be in the form of tax relaxation and more FSI. But we need a nod from the urban development department for that. We want departments related to housing to support the policy and give incentives as per their convenience,” the official said.

The policy proposed by the state on the use of solar energy for domestic purposes is the first of its kind. “The solar energy required for household purposes is little, and therefore we are bringing this separate policy. The energy will be generated with rooftop solar panels. As per the surveys, the state has potential to generate a good amount of solar energy,” he added.

The state government has announced that 7,500 mw of solar power would be generated till 2019. It has invited a public-private-partnership model for the new solar power generation stations. There are innovative experiments taking place in the state to generate power by putting floating solar panels on the sides of dams.
